Biography of John Conomos, Interim Exective Director
John Conomos joined the Geological Survey as a research oceanographer in 1970
and initiated detailed investigations on circulation patterns and suspended
sediment transport in San Francisco Bay and the adjacent ocean. In 1976, he
became coordinator of the Survey's Bay Studies Group, providing scientific
leadership to an interdisciplinary team of about 20 scientists and support
staff, and soon expanded the activities to include a companion study of the
Potomac River Estuary and reconnaissance studies of major Pacific Coast
estuaries. In 1981, he became the Regional Research Hydrologist, providing
support and supervision for approximately 40 research projects with a staff
of 200 scientists and support personnel, focusing on the water resources of
the Western States. In 1985, he was selected the Regional Hydrologist for
the Western Region (nine Western States and the Trust Territories of the
Western Pacific). As such, he directed and coordinated the Survey's
region-wide water resources programs and investigations, which involve a
staff of more than 1,100 professional and technical employees, including
experts in all scientific disciplines related to the field of hydrology. He
retired in 2001 and was appointed scientist emeritus. While on scientist
emeritus status, he became the interim Science Consortium Coordinator in
2002.
Other Key Personnel:
Ladd Lougee
Research Coordinator
Although most of his work involves promoting collaboration and the unification of science and policy, Ladd continues to pursue his research interests in zooplankton ecology part-time with Wim Kimmerer at the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC). After Ladd received his Bachelors degree in 1992 from Gettysburg College he taught Environmental Science to k-12 students on the Neuse River Estuary in North Carolina. Later he moved to Maryland where he conducted research, production and sales efforts for a Company that derives products from micro-algae. Wishing to pursue academic science, Ladd accepted a 1 year position at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute where he performed research on zooplankton ecology under the guidance of Dr. Scott Gallager. Ladd received his Masters degree at San Francisco State University in 2000 and conducted his thesis research at RTC on the vertical migration behavior of zooplankton in the San Francisco Estuary.

Dusty Boeger
Webmaster
Dusty was exposed to the importance of water in California at an early age. Growing up in rural Northern California surrounded by rice fields and almond orchards, he learned early in life that water was precious. Sticking close to home, Dusty received a BA in English from UC Davis with special focus on creative writing and teaching. His writing efforts culminated in the co-authoring of the book "Education Corruption in the State of California". In 1997 he shifted his career focus and moved to the Bay Area to work in the Silicon Valley. Before joining the Science Consortium in May of 2004, Dusty worked as a website developer and graphic artist for an educational software company developing online learning systems for high school students. In addition to his duties with the Consortium, Dusty is also the webmaster for the CALFED Science Program website.
