| Notes: Students at the USGS are typically hired after establishing personal contact with a researcher. Therefore, it is in a students best interest to identify staff at the USGS whose work interests them and contact staff directly to create opportunities. The project chief will then write a position description and the personnel department will advertise for a few weeks in OARS (On-line Automated Recruitment System) where anyone can apply. The positions are usually Federal temporary positions (kept on month by month, no benefits) but sometimes are term positions (term positions are typically longer, lasting up to 4 years, and include benefits). Students can also be hired through a student services contract, which means the student is hired like a self employed contractor (no benefits). Also, they sometimes hire students through ECO (Environmental Careers Organization). ECO screens the students to interview and the USGS pays ECO who then pays the student (ECO works like a temp agency). Student projects, pay rates, and lengths of appointments vary. The main USGS website is located at http://www.usgs.gov. The OARS website is located at http://www.usgs.gov/ohr/oars/. The ECO website is http://www.eco.org. | ||||||||
